Following the Scottish Reformation Catholicism was outlawed in Scotland but that was eventually repealed after a couple of hundred years. In Glasgow, it's development into an industrial and manufacturing powerhouse saw an influx of workers from across Europe, and many of them were Catholics looking for somewhere to pray. That place became St. Andrew's Church, and subsequently that was promoted to a Cathedral. In one of its recent renovations, this rather lovely cloister with a reflection (figuratively and literally) area was added. Very nice. :) Coming from Liverpool I always assumed that every city had a Catholic Church on every corner, and it was a long time before I realised that Liverpool was very much the exception rather than the norm.
