Graham and John T. Horne were two hardheaded, sometimes irascible, businessmen whose teamwork made them both very successful and quite wealthy. As early as the 1870s, Graham and Horne established one of the first sawmills in Thunder Bay (pictured here) and tapped into the rapidly growing market for lumber. They soon branched out into shipping and real estate. Graham sub-divided a large housing addition in the region of Southern Avenue and May Street, and Horne bought up much of an island at the mouth of the Kam River for use as an industrial park, and even sponsored his own railway to connect it to the mainland.
