Keywords: Mooi River00.jpg en St John's Anglican Church Mooi River Natal South Africa Own Rotational 2009-04-24 Public domain St John's is an interesting old church It was built in 1872 in what was to be the town of Weston About 15 years later the railway line was built and it by-passed Weston about 2km upstream This meant that Weston never grew and the town of Mooi River grew up around the railway bridge In the later 1870's it was barricaded and people were given protection against possible attacks from Zulus during this unsettled period It served as the main Parish Church until the Church of St Paul's was built in Mooi River in 1941 There was monthly worship at St John's until about 2003 when it was decided to focus Anglican worship at St Paul's You may have noticed the grave of General Woodgate who fought in the Boer War at the battle of Spionkop I don't know why he was buried in this cemetry as there is a Military cemetry nearby with many graves Mooi River was the site of a military hospital Mooi River Anglican churches in South Africa |
