It's all tied in to the picture of Dave in a panda suit, but that's a long story. One of the things that a speaker said was about Asia, and it ran along the lines of "and where would be without the contribution of Japan to high technology electronics - can you imagine life without your mobile phone?!" This really got me thinking...I love Japanese stuff - the techonology, the cars, everything. But I was really struggling to think of a Japanese mobile phone manufacturer. This led me to do a few minute's research and draw the astonishing conclusion - brace yourself trivia fans - that of the top five mobile phone manufacturers, not one is Japanese! The global epicentre of consumer electronics has let the side down! Let's look at them. King of the castle is of course Nokia, the world's biggest mobile manufacturer. Just about everybody thinks they're a Japanese firm, but they are of course Finnish - Nokia is a little town in Finland! I seem to remember reading that they're the only firm in the world whose turnover exceeds the taxation revenue of the country they are from! Then we've got Samsung (Korean), LG (Korean), Motorola (American) and the closest we get is Sony Ericsson. Sony are of course as Japanese as they get, but Ericsson are Swedish, and Sony Ericsson (a separate firm) have global headquarters in Sweden and London. Isn't that just mad?
