As folklore has it, this great lake was renamed for a large collection of snowshoes found abandoned on its shoreline. Overtaken by a spring thaw in 1776, an expedition of French Canadian Loyalist Tories, led by Sir John Johnson, left their snowshoes behind. Raquette is the French word for snowshoe.
