His parents moved to Brazil when he was nine years old. His passion for freedom led him to join the Methodist Church when he was 20 years old. He became a pastor and after a distinguished career was elected Bishop in 1949 for the Latin American Central Conference. In 1954, he was elected one of the six Presidents of the World Council of Churches, and it may have been in that capacity that he visited Angola. He died in 1991.
