Views of historic Dresden, Germany.Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony.  Dresden is the 12th most populous city of Germany and the fourth largest by area.  Dresden is the second largest city on the River Elbe just after Hamburg.Dresden has a history as the capital and royal residence for the Kings of Saxony.  The city was known as the Jewel Box due to its' Baroque and Rococo city centre.  During WWII the British and Americans bombed the city killing approximately 25,000 people and destroying the city.  The ruins of the city remained for 50 years until being rebuilt between 1994 and 2005.  Dresen is one of the most popular cities visited in Germany.
Queen Anne was the ruling British monarch, from 1702 to 1714, when Saint Paul`s  Cathedral was first built in 1710. Her statue erected in front of the Cathedral was sculpted by Francis Bird in 1712. The weather beaten statue was subsequently replaced by a replica in 1886.
In this public square known as the Niches is Andrea Cesalpino (1519-1603), physician, philosopher and botanist, noted for classifying plants by fruits and seeds as opposed to alphabetically. In 1555 he became director of Pisa botanical garden.

Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) specialised during the renaissance in humanism, writing, artistry, architecture, poetry, linguistics, philosophy and cryptography.
