It was a man-made channel running underground to bring fresh drinking water from Tyburn in the west of London to Cheapside in the City of London. Its use was discontinued after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The plaque reads, “The Great Conduit stood in this street providing free water 13t Century to 1666”.
