The female flowers of hazel trees ((Corylus) species) are grouped in little egg-shaped, bud-like tufts. The crimson sticks that look like candy peel are the stigmas, which form a tassel at the top. The flower itself is a two-chambered ovary, surrounded by a velvety cup-like bracteole. The bracteole grows into the large leafy husk or cupule of the nut. This particular tree is a Turkish hazel. Taken at high magnification, early March 2010.
