The Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a black and white woodpecker with a red cap and distinctive white eyes. As the name implies, the acorn woodpecker depends on acorns and other nuts as its primary source of food. This woodpecker drills holes in trees where it stores nuts for later consumption. Their diet also consists of fruit, insects and tree sap. It drills larger cavities in dead trees to excavate a nest. Unlike other woodpeckers, the acorn woodpecker lives and nests in small flocks. The acorn woodpecker's habitat is oak forests of Oregon, California, and the southwestern United States, south through Central America to Colombia. This female acorn woodpecker was photographed in a tree near Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
