Turkish and foreign tourists are visiting Hagia Sophia, in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia was the main temple of Byzantium then the Muslim mosque and museum but now is Holy Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi) This redesignation is controversial, drawing condemnation from the Turkish opposition, UNESCO, the World Council of Churches, the International Association of Byzantine Studies, and many international leaders.

Hagia Sophia is a patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral ever built in the world for nearly a thousand years. The  building was  constructed as a church between A.D. 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian.  In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and Sultan Mehmed II ordered the building to be converted into the Ayasofya Mosque.
