The Western Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma californica) is a medium-sized species of corvid native to western North America. The scrub jay inhabits areas of low scrub including oak stands, pinon-juniper forests and mixed evergreen forests. They have small hooked bills and long tails. The head, wings, and tail are blue with a brown back, gray breast and white throat. Scrub jays feed on small animals, eggs and young of other birds and insects. In winter they also eat acorns, grains, nuts, and berries. They have a very good memory enabling them to find and retrieve foods that they have stored in scattered caches. This western scrub jay was photographed standing on a boulder at the Hermit’s Rest area on the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA.
