On the right, the majestic facade of the church of Sant'Agnese, a baroque masterpiece by the architect Francesco Borromini, while on the left some typical Italian restaurants along the square. The Rione Parione, the district surrounding Piazza Navona, is one of the most beautiful and visited districts of Rome for the presence of countless artistic and historical treasures, monuments and ancient Romanesque and Baroque churches, but also for its squares and alleys to explore freely, where it is easy to find typical restaurants, small artisan shops, street artists, and the original Roman soul. Rome, Italy - April 16, 2016: Piazza Navona with crowds of people, probably mostly tourists, on an overcast morning in spring. The piazza (city square) was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian (Stadio di Domiziano), also known as the Circus Agonalis, commissioned around AD 80 by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome. It was originally mostly used for athletic contests. In the background is the Fountain of the four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini) with the Egyptian obelisk. To the left is another fountain, the Moor Fountain (Fontana del Moro). It represents a Moor, or African, standing in a conch shell, wrestling with a dolphin, surrounded by four Tritons. The large building to the left is the Sant'Agnese in Agone, a 17th-century Baroque church. The early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. Construction began in 1652.
