A fighter jet refueling probe is a component for aerial refueling operations, allowing combat aircraft to extend their operational range and endurance. Typically mounted on the nose or upper fuselage, the probe extends forward to connect with the drogue or basket of a tanker aircraft's refueling hose. When engaged, fuel is transferred from the tanker to the fighter jet. Probes vary in design but generally consist of a telescopic or fixed structure ending in a nozzle that interfaces with the tanker's refueling system. This system enables fighters like the Eurofighter (pictured), F/A-18 Hornet and F-16 Fighting Falcon to undertake longer missions or loiter in combat areas without needing to return to base. The successful operation of the probe demands precision piloting and coordination between both aircraft involved in the refueling process. Aerial refueling, also referred to as air refueling, in-flight refueling (IFR), mid-air refueling, air-to-air refueling (AAR), and tanking, is the process of transferring aviation fuel from one aircraft (the tanker) to another (the receiver) while both aircraft are in flight.

Adjustable exhaust nozzle with partly expanded diffusers - a variable area nozzle is required in a jet engine for optimal expansion and adjusting back pressure in the engine when the afterburner is operated, it avoids compressor surge problems due to the increased back pressure on the engine when the afterburner is lit - engines capable of supersonic flight have convergent-divergent exhaust duct features to generate supersonic flow - GE F110 afterburning turbofan jet engine on F-16 fighters - empennage close-up of exhaust and elevator.
