Stout tall, pleasantly aromatic perennial, to 2m; stem green, sometimes purple tinged, hollow and ridged. Leaves triangular or diamond-shape in outline, 2-3 pinnate, with large rather irregular divisions, coarsely toothed; upper leaves reduced to large inflated sheaths. Flowers greenish or cream, 3-4, in large umbels up to 25cm across, with numerous rays; bracts few or absent. Fruit oblong, 6-8mm, with corky wings.\nHabitat: Damp places, riverbanks, ditches, damp meadows, thickets and waste places, locally abundant.\nFlowering Season: June-September.\nDistribution: The Faeroes, Iceland, Holland, Germany and much of Scandinavia; naturalized in Britain, Belgium and France.\nLong cultivated as a drug plant. The roots and fruits are used for various stomach disorders, but also used as a confection, for seasoning liqueurs. Often naturalized from gardens.
