This is the original Joker playing card from the 'Shakespeare' 1895 deck, produced by Bernhard Dondorf in Germany for the London company C. W. Faulkner & Co. This card shows the Joker riding on the back of a donkey. Curiously, the quotation at the bottom 'Laugh and the world laughs with you' is not from Shakespeare, but from (Solitude) by 19th century poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox. After 1902, this deck was published by Dondorf with different Jokers and plain Aces of Spades as 'No 192'. C. W. Faulkner and Co. operated from Golden Lane in London, EC1. From 1882 they worked as lithographers, and also printed in gravure. Their best-quality playing cards were those printed in Germany, some by Dondorf, prior to the First World War. C. W. Faulkner and Co. were best known for their postcards and greetings cards, including Misfitz, which they produced until about 1920. The company closed in 1956.

Here is the llittle magician, the joker from a pack of Belgian playing cards printed in 1910. The card case has the words (Fine glazed playing cards no. 1322, Lion-Brand, Made in Belgium). The name Lion-Brand thinly disguises the name of the maker of these playing cards, Leonard Biermans. This Belgian company operated between 1875 and 1973, when it was taken over by Cartamundi. This image is offered for sale with the permission of Cartamundi. Jokers from more packs of playing cards: .

This playing card illustrates the proverb 'Exchange is no Robbery'. A more modern rendition would read 'Fair exchange is no robbery'. The illustration shows a tramp exchanging clothes with a scarecrow. Victorian children were encouraged to learn the English proverbs, of which this is a well-known example. This game is attributed to games manufacturer Multum In Parvo ('much in a small space'). The company formed in the 1890s at 144 Falkland Road, Hornsey, London, N8. In 1931 the company was liquidated following almost continuous financial difficulties throughout the 1920s. The dated style of the illustrations suggests that they were drawn in the mid-19th century.
The Newport Tower, aka Old Stone Mill, round stone tower located in Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island, \n\nRemains of a windmill built in the mid-17th century. It has received attention due to speculation that it is actually several centuries older and would thus represent evidence of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. Carbon dating shows this belief to be incorrect.\n\nPhotograph from 19th century
