In a small area of vacant land in Southern California, burrowing owls flock together by the roadside. As trucks pass by, and planes fly to and from the Ontario Airport, these owls resort to this small piece of lasting native land. The highways, airports, and other infrastructures have driven these small owls to a small piece of land, a perfect example of humans disrupting nature.

As this owl perches on a small branch, it curiously gazes at the camera with its adorable, yet massive eyes.
A Burrowing Owl near its nest hole near the Salton Sea in Imperial County, southern California. The Burrowing Owl is the only owl that nests in holes in the ground and has long legs adapted for a life on the ground. They are often active by day. They have a very large range that includes most of North and South America, although they are under pressure in the former because of persecution of prairie dogs (the owls share their burrows) and by relentless development. The owls tolerate agricultural use of land to some extent, nesting beside cultivated fields and along irrigation ditches.

Rabbit owl in the caatinga of Brazil
A small bird, its average size is 21.5 to 28.5 cm (males) and 22 to 25 cm (females). It weighs between 110 and 285 g (males) and 150 to 265 g (females). It has a round, untufted head, and its eyes are arranged side by side in the same plane. The eyebrows are white and the eyes are yellow. The coloration is earthy, mimetic, and may present rusty plumage tones caused by purple soils (adventitious coloration). Unlike most owls, the male is slightly larger than the female, and females are usually darker than males, especially on the face. It has a smooth, silent flight. It has to turn its neck because its large eyes are arranged side by side in the same plane. This frontal position gives the owl binocular vision (it sees an object with both eyes at the same time). This means the owl can see objects in three dimensions—height, width, and depth. The burrowing owl's eyes are quite large—in some owl subspecies, even larger than its brain—to improve its efficiency in low-light conditions, better capturing and processing available light. In addition to its privileged vision, the burrowing owl has excellent hearing, enabling it to locate its prey using only this sense.
