Green Flower of Blackboard Tree or Devil Tree
Mountain laurel flowers and, sprouting above them, spring growth of the shrub's evergreen leaves. Taken mid June in wild Connecticut, where this is the state flower.
Blackboard tree (Alstonia scholaris) is also called devil's tree, Scholar Tree, Milkwood and is member of the family Apocynaceae. This evergreen tropical tree has sweet smelling, cluster of small white flowers that bloom in October. It is native to southern China, tropical Asia and Australasia.
Cornus kousa, commonly called Japanese dogwood, Kousa, and Kousa dogwood, is native to East Asia and is a small, deciduous flowering tree, with bloom occurring from late spring to early summer (May-June). Kousa dogwood “flowers” are four petal-like white bracts which surround the center cluster of yellowish-green, true flowers. Flowers are followed by berry-like fruits which mature to a pinkish red in summer.
