Badlands National Park glowing in the late afternoon sun with a beautiful streaky cirrus cloudscape big sky view. Badlands NP is located on the western edge of the great plains of the United States and on the eastern edge of the Black Hills in the state of South Dakota. The ongoing erosion of bentonite coupled with clay soil makes for fantastic and colorful formations. This was picture was taken after blazing our own trail to the top. Our climb was rewarded with a fantastic cirrus cloud view of Badlands National Park.

Badlands National Park in South Dakota consists of more than 242,000 acres of land. Dramatic landscapes including rock formations, steep canyons, towering spires and prairie grass are home to Bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs. Erosion has revealed sedimentary layers of purple and yellow (shale), tan and gray (sand and gravel), red and orange (iron oxides) and white (volcanic ash). It was designated a National Monument in 1939 and re-designated a National Park in 1978.

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota, featuring nearly 400 square miles of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, and the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States.
Jackson County, South Dakota - USA: This boardwalk takes you back in time approximately 75 million years as many educational interpretive panels with Fossil replicas are avail for you to see and learn, have been located here near the Badlands loop road on the west side of the park. On this June day it has many visitors for this educational display.

Badlands National Park (Lakota: Makȟóšiča[3]) is an American national park located in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi; 982.4 km2)[1] of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The National Park Service manages the park, with the South Unit being co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.[4]In the heart of sparsely setteled region, far from major sources of industrial pollution. Badlands National Park offers clean air and haze free views, most of the time. On a clear day, you can see Eagle nestButte, thirty miles away. On a clear night you can see a wealth of distant stars, trillions miles away. But all too often, Polluted air flows in from, industrial areas as far away as Southern California, Arizona, Midwest and mask of pollution veils the badlands.

The colors of the ridges in the sedimentary rock formations of the Badlands come from mineral deposits laid down over millions of years. Geologists now have a good idea of what each layer represents in terms of the changes in the earth’s surface over time.
