The Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) is one of the most common trees in Yellowstone National Park, covering nearly 80% of the park's forests. This hardy species thrives in the park's volcanic soil and can reach heights of 70 to 80 feet. Lodgepole Pines have a unique relationship with fire; their serotinous cones require the intense heat of a wildfire to open and release seeds, aiding in forest regeneration. The tree's straight, slender trunks were historically used by Native Americans to construct lodges, hence the name.
