Close-up details from the exterior façades of Florence Cathedral, highlighting the materials, sculptures, works and colours of this structure
A detailed front view of the stunning Gothic facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta or Duomo in the medieval town of Orvieto, in the Umbria region, central Italy. The construction of the magnificent Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, began in 1290 under the pontificate of Pope Nicholas IV and was completed in the second half of the 15th century. More than 20 artists worked on the magnificent façade of the Cathedral during the two centuries of construction of the church. With a population of just 20,000 people, Orvieto is considered one of the most beautiful cities of art in Italy, founded since the Etruscan and Roman times on the flat top of a large butte of volcanic tuff. This same material was used for the construction of almost all the medieval houses and churches of Orvieto, as well as its famous Gothic-style Cathedral. Image in high definition format.

The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral or Duomo dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was completed between 1215 and 1348, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. The lower part of the facade was made of white and pink marble by the sculptor and architect Giovanni Pisano between 1284 and 1297, while the upper part is the work of the sculptor Camaino di Crescentino, built between 1299 and 1317. Inside, the Sienese cathedral preserves countless artistic masterpieces created by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Pinturicchio, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini and others. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen historical neighborhoods of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. Since 1995 the historic center of Siena has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition quality.
