The detail of a fresco by Cimabue inside the Basilica Inferiore di San Francesco (Upper Basilica of San Francesco), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor since 1230. The construction of the Basilica consists of a Lower Basilica and an Upper Basilica, perfectly integrated. Over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity between peoples and between the different confessions of the world. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2000 the Basilica and other Franciscan sites of Assisi have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition format.

A view of the beautiful frescos inside a chapel in the Duomo of Spoleto in the medieval town of Spoleto in Umbria, central Italy. The fresco, which represents a Madonna and Child between St. John the Baptist and Saint Leonard, was made in 1497 by Pinturicchio in a small chapel on the right side of the main nave of the cathedral on commission of the bishop Constantine Eroli. The Duomo, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), was built starting from 1067 in Romanesque and Lombard style and consecrated in 1198. Spoleto, one of the most visited medieval cities in Italy, hosts the Festival of the Two Worlds, a world-famous event that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians, classical dancers and opera singers every year. Monticchio Lakes, Province of Potenza, Italy - 3 june 2023: In the splendid naturalistic scenery offered by the two lake basins of Monticchio, stands the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. The Abbey was built in the 8th century AD on the site of a cave dug into the tuff, inhabited by the Basilian monks. Today, a multi-storey convent, an eighteenth-century church and the chapel of San Michele Arcangelo are part of the complex. The cave of the Angel dedicated to St. Michael is adorned with frescoes dating back to the mid-11th century and was the place where the Italo-Greek monks who formerly inhabited the area gathered in prayer. Over the centuries the Abbey has seen the succession of different monastic orders, in fact there were first the Benedictines, then the Augustinians and finally the Capuchins.
