Sednaya is a unique place in the Middle East. It is one of the only two (the other is Maalula) Aramaic speaking villages in the world. Aramaic is said to be the native language of Jesus. The local people in these villages speak more or less Arabic now, but there is a small community of Christian people living in the region and they practice Aramaic language rituals in this (and some other) monastery. Aramaic sounds like ancient Hebrew.
