The male American Goldfinch, or Spinus tristis, is in in bright, breeding plumage.  The predominant color of the American goldfinch feathers are bright, lemon yellow.  Its cap is black, and the beak bright orange.  The goldfinch has black lesser coverts and white wing bars that are barely visible on the viewers left side.  The American goldfinch is facing straight and slightly right gazing at a thistle seed and its white, feathery weed. The thistle stalk shows some pink from its interior. The American goldfinch is the state bird for Washington, Iowa and New Jersey.
Many Japanese white-eye and other birds flock to the branches of Ligustrum obtusifolium in winter to eat black berries. Native to Japan, Korea and China, Ligustrum obtusifolium, commonly called border privet, is a perennial, deciduous shrub, which grows to 3 meters in height and has many stemmed branches. White flowers appear in June and fruits appear in September and persist into winter.
