One of the most popular pioneer cabins in the Cades Cove section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the Carter Shields cabin. It sits off by itself in a grove of trees, and emphasizes just how isolated the early settlers were in a popular home for black bears and other critters.

Tipton Cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Located at the Magnolia Plantation in Ashley, South Carolina this is one of the few remaining homes where the workers on the plantation lived with their families. Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation is one of the oldest plantations in the south. The grounds of this plantation are the oldest public gardens in America.

The Carter Shields House is one of the most popular stops along the 14-mile Cades Cove loop, but it's never lovelier than in the Spring during those few days the dogwood trees are in full bloom. This photograph shows the cabin in the background with the blooming dogwood trees and rustic wooden fence in the foreground.
