The lock gates at Bude Canal, Cornwall are closed, keeping the water at bay - luckily for the heron. Has he spotted a fish for his supper in the remaining pool of water? The lock is a superb feat of engineering, completed in 1823, though its glory was short-lived, soon being eclipsed by the railways.
