This is the headstone of John Edward Trenchman, a notorious pirate who died after an ambush by Customs men in 1687. He first ran away to sea aged twelve, and his history can be found by searching the Internet. John Edward Trenchman is buried near the main door of the Church of St. Nicholas in Godstone, Surrey, southern England. The people of Godstone took pity on the mortally wounded pirate, and bedecked his headstone with the skull-and-crossbones emblem.
