Built in neoclassical style on the Quirinal hill between 1573 and 1583 as the summer residence of Pope Gregory XIII, this palace over the centuries has been the residence of the Popes (1605-1870), the residence of the King of Italy (1871-1946) and official seat of the Presidency of the Republic (from 1946 to today). Some of the most important Italian architects and artists participated in its construction and decoration, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Maderno, Guido Reni and Domenico Fontana. The Quirinal Palace, with an extension of 110,000 square meters, is the sixth largest building in the world. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
