The majestic and beautiful facade in Gothic style of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in the medieval town of Orvieto, in the Umbria region, central Italy. The construction of the magnificent Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, began in 1290 under the pontificate of Pope Nicholas IV and was completed in the second half of the 15th century. More than 20 artists worked on the magnificent façade of the Cathedral during the two centuries of construction of the church. With a population of just 20,000 people, Orvieto is considered one of the most beautiful cities of art in Italy, founded since the Etruscan and Roman times on the flat top of a large butte of volcanic tuff. This same material was used for the construction of almost all the medieval houses and churches of Orvieto, as well as its famous Gothic-style Cathedral. Image in high definition format.

It is also the most populated city in Tuscany, with 360,930 inhabitants in 2023, and 984,991 in its metropolitan area.\nFlorence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of that era. It is considered by many academics to have been the birthplace of the Renaissance, becoming a major artistic, cultural, commercial, political, economic and financial center. During this time, Florence rose to a position of enormous influence in Italy, Europe, and beyond. Its turbulent political history includes periods of rule by the powerful Medici family and numerous religious and republican revolutions. From 1865 to 1871 the city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The Florentine dialect forms the base of Standard Italian and it became the language of culture throughout Italy due to the prestige of the masterpieces by Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolò Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini.\nThe city attracts millions of tourists each year, and UNESCO declared the Historic Centre of Florence a World Heritage Site in 1982. The city is noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture and monuments. The city also contains numerous museums and art galleries, such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Pitti, and still exerts an influence in the fields of art, culture and politics. Due to Florence's artistic and architectural heritage, Forbes ranked it as the most beautiful city in the world in 2010.\nFlorence plays an important role in Italian fashion, and is ranked in the top 15 fashion capitals of the world by Global Language Monitor; furthermore, it is a major national economic centre, as well as a tourist and industrial hub.

Begun in 1290, Orvieto Cathedral is adorned inside and out with the best Italian art on offer at the time. It’s awash in color with a riveting ensemble of spires, spikes, golden mosaics, statuary, stained glass, and black and white striped marble. And that’s just the facade. Inside, there’s a chapel containing a holy relic and one covered in stunning early Renaissance frescos that influenced Michelangelo.

Italy - Umbria, Orvieto: The Duomo di Orvieto is a large 14th century Roman Catholic cathedral situated in the town of Orvieto, central Italy. The building was constructed under the orders of Pope Urban IV to commemorate and provide a suitable home for the Corporal of Bolsena, a miracle which is said to have occurred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena, when a traveling priest who had doubts about the truth of transubstantiation found that his Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. The cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the cathedral.
