Iju (Scientific name: Schima liukiuensis), native to Okinawa and the Amami islands, Japan, is an evergreen tree in the family Theaceae. Rhaphiolepis indica, commonly known as India hawthorn, is a dense, broad-leaved evergreen shrub that typically grows to 4-6’ tall and as wide. Native to southern China, it grows in other Asian countries, including Japan, and Australia. It features serrate, oblong, dak-green leaves. Fragrant, white to light pink flowers bloom in spring in clusters. Flowers are followed by small dark blue berries.
