Beautiful stone carvings adorn the front of the Cathedral of the Annunciation, a Greek Orthodox church in the Mount Royal neighborhood of Baltimore. \n\nOn the left arch of the portico is inscribed “House of God” in Greek. On the right arch is inscribed “Gate of Heaven.” \n\nThe building was completed in 1890 for a Protestant congregation. The congregation used this building until 1934, when, with a diminished membership, it moved to a smaller location. The church laid vacant until 1937 until it was purchased by the Greek community of Baltimore. The interior was remodeled to conform to Greek Orthodox practice, and some exterior changes were made, such as the Greek lettering seen here.
