Wadi Rum is a desert valley cut into the sandstone and granite cliffs in southern Jordan. Known also as the Valley of the Moon it has been inhabited since prehistoric times (witnessed by the petroglyph inscriptions) and by semi nomadic tribes since the Nabataeans but is best known for its association with T E Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia - who based himself here to encourage the Arab Revolt and to attack Turkish Forces of the Ottoman Empire during WW1 especially along the narrow gauge Hijaz Railway linking Istanbul to Medina and Damascus that was built with German help. He was later immortalized by the film of the same name, made in 1962 by David Lean of which this image shows rolling stock used in the film and later abandoned. Today the only inhabitants are Bedouin tribes and transient tourists.

Luena (Luso), Moxico province, Angola: C30ACi diesel-electric locomotive (Wabtec / GE Transportation) at Luena railway station - The Benguela Railway is a major rail line in Angola, stretching from the Atlantic port city of Lobito to the eastern border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Originally constructed in the early 20th century, the railway was designed to facilitate the transportation of minerals, particularly copper from the Congolese and Zambian mines, to the coast for export. The railway spans over 1,300 kilometers, crossing diverse terrains and serving as a vital link between the interior regions of Angola and international markets.

Rusting parts of the “The Last Train to Nowhere” on the Arctic tundra near Safety Sound south of Nome, Alaska. The steamship Aztec delivered three locomotives, track, and railroad ties to the site in 1903, and the Council City & Solomon River railroad was born. Construction stopped in 1906 after 35 miles of track were laid and the gold ore ran out. The old locomotives and scattered derelict parts are all that remain.
