There are more than 900 churches in the city of Rome.1 Since the Emperor Theodosius I recognized Christianity as the official religion through the Edict of Thessalonica in 380, the number of churches in Rome began to grow as this city quickly became the world center of Christianity as it is the residence of the Pope. During the Middle Ages, many buildings of the empire were demolished to build new churches, such as the Colosseum, since many parts of this building, for centuries a symbol of Roman culture, were destroyed to make way for new cathedrals and churches. Once the Renaissance entered, old religious sites began to decline and were demolished, but in their place new samples of religious art were built, whose maximum expression was reached at the beginning of the 17th century, with the consecration of the Basilica of Saint Peter. , by Pope Urban VIII, by Bramante and Michelangelo.

A suggestive perspective of the rear side of the Tempietto in the courtyard of the church of San Pietro in Montorio, located on the Janiculum hill in the historic district of Trastevere, in the heart of Rome. Built in 1510 by the architect Donato Bramante, the Tempietto (Small Temple) is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with the search for a perfect balance of shapes and volumes. The circular plan and the relationship between the dome and the colonnade recalls the classical values of Roman architecture, such as the famous Temple of Vesta located in the Roman Forum. According to tradition, the Tempietto was built to celebrate the martyrdom of St. Peter, which supposedly took place on the Janiculum. Trastevere is an iconic district of the Eternal City, due to the presence of countless artistic and historical treasures, monuments and ancient Romanesque and Baroque churches, but also for its squares and alleys to be explored freely, where it is easy to find typical restaurants, pubs, small shops of artisans and scenes of daily life with the original Roman soul. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle and high definition image.
