Cornus kousa, commonly called Japanese dogwood, Kousa, and Kousa dogwood, is native to East Asia and is a small, deciduous flowering tree, with bloom occurring from late spring to early summer (May-June). Kousa dogwood “flowers” are four petal-like white bracts which surround the center cluster of yellowish-green, true flowers. Flowers are followed by berry-like fruits which mature to a pinkish red in summer.

Other names include red willow, redstem dogwood, redtwig dogwood, red-rood, American dogwood, creek dogwood, and western dogwood.

Deciduous shrub to 4m, with dark red twigs. Leaves opposite, elliptical to oval, pointed, untoothed, hairy, with 3-4 pairs of main veins. Flowers dull white, 8-10mm, in umbel-like clusters. Fruit almost globose, 5-8mm, black when ripe.\nHabitat: Woods, scrub and hedgerows, on calcareous soils, sometimes locally dominant.\nFlowering Season: June-July.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the extreme north; naturalized in Finland.\nThe leaves often turn a rich purplish-red in the autumn and the bare red shoots are very conspicuous in the winter.\n\nThis Shrub is a common Species in the Netherlands in the described Habitats. Also planted in Parks and bigger Gardens.
