A detail of the monumental Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (Trinita dei Monti staircase), better known as Spanish Steps, in the historic and baroque heart of the Eternal City. A masterpiece of the late Roman Baroque, the monumental staircase was built in 1721 to connect the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti on the hill with the underlying Piazza di Spagna (Spain Square). Designed by the architect and urban planner Francesco De Sanctis, the Spanish Steps were inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725.
