The D+R (Delaware and Raritan) Canal was a major shipping channel back in the day for NJ.  Now it's just a great place to go for a walk.  This is one of the few remaining locks that would help raise and lower the barges.  You can get the feelings of control and strength from this scene

The Pennyfield Lock has been restored on the C&O Canal and appears in working order except for the leakage. Otherwise, yet another C&O Canal picture in the heat of summer. But it is chained and padlocked, I mean a locked lock, couldn't resist.
