A British National Serviceman’s Grade Card, issued under the National Service Acts, and dated 29th June 1953 at Lewisham in South East London. He was placed in Grade Two and was aged 18. National Service came into force in the UK in 1949 and required all physically fit males between the ages of 17-21 to serve in one of the British Armed Forces for eighteen months (later two years), after which they were retained on the reserve list for a further four years. National Service ended in 1960, with the last National Servicemen being discharged in 1963. (Identifying information removed.)
