The lions of the Congress of Deputies are two bronze sculptures that symbolically guard the entrance to the Cortes. They are located at the main entrance of the Palace of the Cortes in Madrid. They are popularly known as Daoíz and Velarde, the heroes of the Uprising of May 2nd, although sources indicate that they actually represent Hippomenes and Atalanta.\n\nThey are a symbol of national sovereignty and Spanish politics and frequently appear in news reports, as well as in the logo of the Congress of Deputies.
