A panorama of a clearing afternoon storm along the eastern face of the San Rafael Reef. The San Rafael Swell is a geological formation in south-central Utah, about 75 by 40 miles (121 by 64 km), consisting of a dome of sandstone, limestone, and shale, pushed up some 40-60 million years ago. The folding is much steeper and more abrupt on the eastern edge and is referred to as the San Rafael Reef. The area is very rugged and remote and only one paved road, Interstate 70, pierces it from west to east.
