Before the flowering plants, the landscape was dominated with plants that looked like ferns for hundreds of millions of years. Pteridophytes show many characteristics of their ancestors: unlike most other members of the Plant Kingdom, pteridophytes don’t reproduce through seeds, they reproduce through spores instead.

The Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant) thrives in Washington State, including regions along the dry eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range. It typically grows in moist to wet environments such as forests, stream banks, and wetlands. This fern is known for its distinctive appearance, with two types of fronds: sterile fronds, which are broader and spreading, and fertile fronds, which are narrower and upright with spore-bearing structures. Its ability to thrive in various moisture conditions makes it well-suited for the diverse microclimates found across the Cascade Range, including both the wetter western and somewhat drier eastern slopes. This group of deer ferns was photographed within a boulder crack alongside the Eight Mile Lake Trail in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Leavenworth, Washington State, USA.
