American beech (Fagus grandifolia) in New England woods turning golden in fall. This is the famous smooth-barked tree that unthinking people carve their initials into. Many American beeches suffer from two new diseases -- beech bark and beech leaf disease -- that may wipe out the species. This young beech, however, appears healthy for the time being.
