Rusting old World War II guns on Ile Goree or Goree Island located just off-shore in Dakar Harbor Senegal West Africa. This offshore Entrepot and fortress was built by the Portugues back in the 15-16th centuries and was a major slave trade loading point for over three centuries. Today it is a memorial and artist hangout with small shops, galleries and restaurants in many of the restored historic structures. The island itself is geologically an old volcanic plug and vent that sticks up from the surrounding countryside and has extensive cliffs of basalt that make it an ideal fortress. Even during World War II it became a major coastal defense point for the Free French Forces when they retreated from France. Today the guns and emplacements are rusting away and old gun turrets are now artist hangouts.
