Elmina, Ghana: Benya Street and São Jorge da Mina Castle, also known simply as Mina or 'Feitoria da Mina', built by Portugal in 1482, the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara. Elmina, Ghana: wrought iron railing over the central court of Saint George / São Jorge da Mina Castle, bearing the  'W' of the Dutch West India Company ('Geoctroyeerde West-Indische Compagnie', WIC, GWIC, GWC). Built by the Portuguese in 1482, first established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. The Dutch West India Company seized the fort from the Portuguese in 1637.  The slave trade operated under the Dutch until 1814. In 1872, the Dutch Gold Coast, including the fort, became a British possession - colonial architecture - UNESCO World Heritage Site.
