Ajuda, Elvas municipality, Portalegre district, Portugal: Ajuda Bridge is a historic structure that spanned the Guadiana River, connecting the Portuguese town of Elvas with Olivença, a town historically claimed by both Portugal and Spain, controlled by the latter since 1801. Built in 1509 during the reign of King Manuel I of Portugal, the bridge was designed to facilitate trade and military movement, a significant strategic and economic link. However, during the War of Spanish Succession in 1709, the bridge was partially destroyed by Spanish forces to hinder Portuguese troop movements. While it was never fully restored, the remains of the Ajuda Bridge still stand today, symbolizing both the historical conflict and the enduring cultural ties between Portugal and Spain. Though no longer functional as a crossing, the ruins are a significant monument and a reminder of the region's complex past. Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda /Puente de Nuestra Señora de Ayuda.

Tourist and commercial traffic using the road bridge, the Douy Viaduct, a road bridge, built in 1993 as part of the road improvements actiong as a bypass of the Corniche de la Côte-Vermeille between the resorts of Collioure and Port-Vendres in Languedoc Roussillon in the deep south west of France. This road was originally part of the Route Nationale, (RN 114), but changed to become the D914 in 2006.

Ajuda, Elvas municipality, Portalegre district, Portugal: Nossa Senhora da Ajuda Bridge (Our Lady of Help), also known as the Olivença Bridge, is a historic structure located on the Guadiana River, connecting Elvas in Portugal to Olivença. Built in 1510, the bridge has a tumultuous history marked by destruction and reconstruction due to conflicts between Portugal and Spain. Initially, it suffered damage from flooding in 1597, and later, it was destroyed by the Castilian army in 1646. Although it was repaired, the bridge was again demolished in 1709 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite its dilapidated state, the bridge remains a significant historical monument, with parts of its original 19 arches still visible. Today, the ruins of the Ajuda Bridge stand as a testament to the region’s turbulent past. The bridge was 380 meters long and 5.5 meters wide, featuring a three-story turret for defense. In 2000, a new bridge was constructed nearby, funded entirely by the Portuguese government, highlighting the ongoing territorial dispute over Olivença.

Mertola is a Portuguese village of the district of Beja, Alentejo region and sub-region of Alentejo, with less than 2000 inhabitants. The village is situated on a hill on the right bank of the Guadiana River.
