Gorée Island, Dakar, Senegal: House of Slaves and its infamous door of no return - built the late 18th century, located on the east coast of the island. Despite historical studies which have shown that the House of Slaves would not have played a relevant role in the slave trade, it remains a place which for many has great symbolic significance as a symbol of the slave trade and slavery. The door in the image, facing the ocean, would have been the place of embarkation for slaves boarding ships bound for the Americas, though vessels could not dock there. Built for Anne Pépin, a 'signare'. In this period, the owners would be more concerned with the trade in gum arabic, ivory and gold. Unesco world heritage site.
