Black and white photograph of Fantoft medieval wooden tarred stave church in the City of Bergen on the west cost of Norway on a sunny day in spring. The church is surrounded by trees, mostly beech trees. The image shows includes the roof with dragon heads. The dragon heads served to ward off evil spirits and was used by the vikings as to decorate jewellery, accessories and weapons and placed on the bow of their ships (as well as on the roof of buildings). The church was originally built around the year 1150 at Fortun in Sogn (in the Sognefjord). Threatened with demolition as a new church had been built to replace the old, the stave church was bought by consul Fredrik Georg Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft in 1883. On 6 June 1992, the church was destroyed by arson. Reconstruction of the church began soon after the fire and was completed in 1997.
