Badlands-type erosion cuts through a series of clays dating from the Upper Eocene, more than fifty metres thick. This perfectly horizontal clay series is made up of alternating white, pale yellow and green to bluish clays, and includes a few slightly more indurated banks that are more resistant to erosion. This erosion, which is relatively unusual in France outside regions with a Mediterranean climate, combined with these alternating colours, produces landscapes that are both surprising and aesthetically pleasing. And unlike the erosion patterns in the Ochres of Roussillon (see Les ocres de Roussillon, Vaucluse), these landscapes are not the result of the recolonisation of former quarries by vegetation, but are the work of nature alone.
