Chaenomeles speciosa, also often called Japanese quince and flowering quince, normally blooms in early spring, about the same time as cherry blossoms in Japan. The flowers are 3–4.5 cm in diameter, with five petals in red, pink or white color.

The Nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa) is a species of Prunus native to northern and western China, Korea, Mongolia, and possibly northern India. Other common names for P. tomentosa include Korean cherry, Manchu cherry, downy cherry, Shanghai cherry, Ando cherry, mountain cherry, Chinese bush cherry, Chinese dwarf cherry, or Hansen's bush cherry.

Plum blossom season starts in late January and lasts until March in Japan. In spite of severe cold climate, plum flowers are brave enough to start decorating bare branches of plum trees in our parks and gardens with red, pink and white blossoms, hinting to us that spring is around the corner, which is very encouraging to us Japanese who have endured cold winter with few flowers to please our eyes. They start blooming in cold weather, prior to the cherry blossom season.
