It is also known as the Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde, for the four parts of the world embodied by its female figures, or simply the Fontaine Carpeaux. The sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet, the nephew and pupil of the sculptor François Rude, made the horses in the basin around the statue.
The Medici Fountain, built in 1630, is one of the most beautiful monumental fountains in all of Paris. It is located in the shade of trees and almost hidden on a side of the Luxembourg gardens. Restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was also moved stone by stone in 1860. A simple and romantic place around which it is pleasant to stroll, relax, read, or just dream. The central niche represents Acis and Galatea lying under a rock on top of which Polyphemus is preparing to launch a stone to kill the rival.
