The Pasteur Institute (Institut Pasteur) is a French non-profit private foundation dedicated to the study of biology, micro-organisms, diseases, and vaccines. It is named after Louis Pasteur, who made some of the greatest breakthroughs in modern medicine at the time, including pasteurization and vaccines for anthrax and rabies. The institute was founded in 1887. For over a century, the Institut Pasteur has been at the forefront of the battle against infectious disease. Since 2020, the Pasteur Institute has been working on research into the vaccine against the Covid-19 coronavirus. This vintage lithograph print depicts the portrait of a chief of an Araucanian tribe in Chile, circa 1856. He may be of the fierce Mapuche people, who resisted both Inca and Spanish conquest attempts. He is holding a spear and is wearing traditional tribal dress. Lithograph is a facsimile of the painting by John Mix Stanley (1814 - 1872). Published in the 1856 record of an American expedition to Chile, it is now in the public domain.
